Madeira is an island that belongs to Portugal, located some ways west of Gibraltar. Madeira is very green island, having nice climate and mountains that climb almost 2000m up from the sea level. The nature of the island is very accessible due to the irrigation canals, or "levadas" that have been dug into the hills and mountains in almost all parts of the island. There are many guide books that outline the levada network, and provide easy instructions how to get to the levadas. Our favourite book is from Sunflower books, and available at least through Amazon.
On one hand, there is not that much of night life or beaches on this island, and hotels usually have their own swim areas, even with sea access. But on the other hand, there is abundance of hiking routes and great views! Some of these are easily accessible to anyone travelling with bus or car, while others require hours of hiking, passing through tunnels, and careful steps before seeing their splendor, like the waterwall shown in the pictures, in place called Caldeirao Verde.
